In 1971, he relocated to a secluded cabin he had constructed outside of Lincoln, Montana, where he could lead a modest life with little money, no running water or electricity, and odd jobs while receiving a sizable amount of financial assistance from his family.He commuted to town on an old bicycle and, according to a volunteer at the neighborhood library, frequently went there to study classic works in their original languages.

Buckley Crist, a professor of materials engineering at Northwestern University, was the target of Kaczynski’s first mail bomb. A package with Crist’s return address was discovered on May 25, 1978, at a University of Illinois at Chicago parking lot.Crist was sceptical because he hadn’t shipped the box, so he alerted campus police when it was “returned” to him. In 1979, he placed a bomb in the cargo hold of American Airlines Flight 444, a Boeing 727 flying from Chicago to Washington, D.C.The bomb’s timing device malfunctioned and stopped it from detonating, but it produced smoke instead, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing.Percy Wood, the president of United Airlines, received the next device that Kaczynski sent. Most of Wood’s body was covered in cuts and burns.The University of California, Berkeley was the target of the following two bombs planted by Kaczynski. Diogenes Angelakos, a professor of engineering, suffered significant injuries in the first incident in July 1982.John Hauser, a PhD student and captain in the US Air Force, lost the eyesight in one eye and four fingers almost three years later, in May 1985.Kaczynski made the bomb by hand using wooden components.

In 1993, Professor David Gelernter of computer science at Yale University received a bomb in the mail from Kaczynski. A piece of Gelernter’s right hand, one of his ears, and one of his eyes were all paralysed.On April 3, 1996, Kaczynski was apprehended at his cabin by FBI officers. 40,000 handwritten diary pages with bomb-making experiments, descriptions of the Unabomber murders, and a cache of bomb parts were found during the search, along with one live bomb.Johnson, a federal prison doctor, said Kaczynski was capable of standing trial on January 21, 1998, “despite the psychiatric diagnoses”.Prosecutors sought the death penalty because they believed Kaczynski was competent to stand trial, but he avoided it by pleading guilty to all charges on January 22, 1998, and accepting a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In order to better his health, 79-year-old Kaczynski was moved on December 14, 2021, from the supermax prison in Florence, Colorado to the Federal Medical Centre in Butner, North Carolina.On June 10, 2023, at 12:23 in the morning, Kaczynski’s cell received a call from emergency personnel. He was put to death at the hospital after numerous attempts to revive him—both within the prison and in an ambulance—failed. Authorities suspect he committed suicide.
