In 1949, her great-grandfather Louie Mueller opened the renowned Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor, Texas. Bobby took over the eatery in 1974, and in 2006, the James Beard Foundation honoured it with one of its America’s Classic Restaurants Awards. Wayne, LeAnn’s brother, was in charge of the eatery.LeAnn had a natural desire to start her own BBQ restaurant. In 2011, she and her other brother, the pitmaster John Mueller, launched JMueller BBQ as a food truck. After John left in 2012, LeAnn started La Barbecue with her then-girlfriend Ali Clem.The couple later got married in 2014.

Their barbecue restaurant has been housed in various food trucks, a counter area within the East Austin store Quickie Pickie since 2017, and its first-ever standalone restaurant on East Cesar Chavez since 2021. They spent equal amounts of time in Austin and Los Angeles. (They formerly intended to open a La Barbecue in LA, but those plans finally failed.) John managed and worked at a number of barbecue trucks and eateries throughout the years, most recently at Hutchins BBQ in Frisco. At the age of 52, he passed away in December 2021.
